What is the Really REALLY Free Market?
Exactly what it sounds like — a really, really FREE MARKET! It’s like a community-wide garage sale or flea market, only instead of exchanging money or other items [as with bartering or trading], goods are GIVEN AWAY! There’s no catch!
Why would I want to just give stuff away like that?
Because you have too many things cluttering up your home? Because you’re just going to throw it away anyway? Because you love that shirt, but you’ll probably never wear it again? It feels good to give! Giving to charitable thrift stores is wonderful, but it’s awesome to KNOW and see that somebody’s really loving that too-small-tank-top/box of crayons/ceramic dolphin statue you made in high school. Aside from those reasons, it’s a great way to build community, especially in our current economic situation.
Sounds good! What should I bring?
That’s up to you! Material goods, veggies or seeds from your garden, food or drinks, a service to provide, a skill you want to teach others, a performance, original art, anything else! [Just nothing illegal or harmful, please! Remember that this is a family-friendly event]
What if I don’t have anything to give away?
Everyone has SOMETHING to give to others! RRFM isn’t just about giving away stuff. Do you cut hair? You can give away free haircuts! Or maybe bring some nail polish and give out free manicures! [you don’t have to give away your supplies, of course, that would be silly!] Maybe you’d like to draw free caricatures, or free face painting, free palm reading. Free concert in the park! Free bike repairs! Just for fun, because it feels reeeaaallly good to help other people out and put a smile on their face.
Who runs the RRFM?
In essence, everyone who participates. What you bring to the event helps create the event for others, just as what others bring to the event helps create the event for YOU! [Of course, it took a few individuals to get this event off the ground, take it from a dream to a reality.] Ultimately..
THE RRFM IS YOURS!!
Take advantage of it, make it what you want it to be! If you want to see something happen that isn’t already happening, MAKE IT HAPPEN! If you want to see more people coming to RRFM, help spread the word! Send e-mails, talk to your friends, make and distribute flyers [you can make your own or download them from this tumblr], talk to people about the RRFM.
Please help us keep RRFM a 100% FREE and NON-COMMERCIAL EVENT. Once a month, we can come together and forget about trading, bartering, and money. Leave the business cards at home and remember the joy of giving for the sake of giving.
